The power of Daniel Beaty's story cannot be retold in a book review. This is about a little boy whose father used to play a game with him until he was three. His father would "knock, knock" on his bedroom door and then get him ready for school. One day the knocks stopped. When Daniel was 25, he wrote a poem and invented what he wished his father had said to him.
I am linking to the youtube page so you can see Daniel perform his whole piece, but the book is softer, made sensory by Bryan Collier's collages and intense painting, and some details are left out.
The book does not share in the actual story that the little boy's father went to prison, and a young child can fill in his own reason as to why Daddy went away. This is a book about loss.
